How to Read Like a Writer & Introduction to Primary Research

How to Read like a Writer:

This was a very interesting read for me and gave me a lot of knowledge on how I can better my writing in a unique way. It is a way of trying to figure out the text you are reading and decide whether you want to use those same choices and techniques in your writing. It is a way of “building” yourself in the way you write and being engaged in a totally different way while reading. The two main questions Bunn introduced while reading like a writer- 1.) Do you know the author’s purpose for this piece of writing? 2.) Do you know who the intended audience is for this piece of writing? This is a question you should be asking at the very beginning of a read and re-visit when finished so you know if the author is clear and has a way of compelling you to keep reading to find out more. Also genres are very important because each genre entails different techniques and must be seriously considered by the authors flow of writing. Depending on the genre, it can be completely different on the formal way it should be written and as a reader it is important to understand each genres different techniques.

Introduction to Primary Research:

I really enjoyed this read because primary research we are constantly using it in our education and will continue using through out our lives.  Primary research is using the scientific method to collect data through observations, interviews, and surveys. To be successful at primary research it begins with careful planning and background research on a specific topic. To stay on top of your research and to make sure you don’t miss anything along the way it is important to create a timeline, which will keep you on task. As you get to know your topic, you can narrow it down to develop a research question and hypothesis. A research question and hypothesis must be very specific and narrow to be able to be clear through these methods. Also it was very intriguing to read about the interviewing process since we are about to do our very own! This gave me a lot more insight on the questions I should be asking to making sure that I record with two separate devices during my interview.
